A healthy skin means we have an effecient and proper functioning skin barrier; a defence protecting the underlying layers of our skin against environmental damage such as UV radiation, water loss, heat, free radicals such as the pathogens in the atmosphere we breathe. A healthy skin also means the cells communicate more effectively, producing new and more dense cells, the surface texture becomes more even, the Melanin is evenly despersed and the evaporation of NMF (natural moisture factor) is much slower. The skin becomes firmer and plumper with a far better hydration function. As we age these benefits become crucial to the condition and appearance of our skin, as it reflects our lifestyle, our home skincare regimen and the choices we make of skin treatments to maintain beautiful healthy skin.

Whilst discussing very dry skin with a client during a recent skin analysis I discovered a masque was being used each morning for a moisturiser. The products have two very different actions on the skin. A moisturiser has long lasting emolient ingredients to provide lubrication either oil-based or water-based, whilst a masque provides a dramatic boost to the skin as a treatment. A masque has many wonderful base ingredients, for example clay-based, oil-based, gel-based, algae-based. Remember, masques work quickly and the rule of the thumb is leave on for 20min or when the masque feels dry before removing. Your skin will absorb the maximum ingredients from a masque in 20mins.
